Education

As part of our mission to Educate, Advocate, and Perform, the HCJO is excited to offer several performance and educational opportunities to local students. Our fall concert is produced in cooperation with local high schools and features a guest artist performer who also travels to each school for clinics and rehearsals. Past guests have included Vince DiMartino on trumpet and Markus Howell on saxophone. Our guest for 2025 will be jazz trumpet artist Nadje Noordhuis.

In the spring, Michigan students have the chance to be a featured performer with the band at our April concert. Auditions for the Student Soloist Showcase are held in early March. Students perform two pieces that feature improvisation in front of a panel of three judges while being backed by the HCJO rhythm section. One winner is selected to perform with the HCJO at our spring concert in April and receives a $200 scholarship for summer or college study.
